Well over 100 000 Private Security industry workers are set to benefit from a hectic program of public briefings into the wages and conditions of employment following a series of meetings conducted in Limpopo this week.
The briefing sessions – which are part of the investigations by the Department of Labour’s Employment Conditions Commission (ECC) – started on Tuesday in Thohoyandou and proceeded to Tzaneen before concluding in Polokwane on Friday. The Department of Labour is in the process of conducting an investigation in the Private Security Sector and Civil Engineering Sector, with the view of setting the conditions of employment and minimum wages within these sectors.
The Department is therefore embarking on a consultation process as part of its information gathering process. The employers, employees and Trade Unions are therefore invited to attend public hearings for these sectors.

The applicant employee was dismissed for making false accusations of sexual harassment against a supervisor, and for exposing her breast to him. The employee denied exposing herself to the supervisor, and claimed that he had once touched her breast and repeatedly poked her in the ribs, despite her clear indication that this was unwanted. The supervisor admitted only that he had occasionally touched the applicant on the shoulder to attract her attention while she was working at her machine, but denied any sexual motivation.
